About
This site presents information about and images of the great English film actor George Sanders. At least everyone thought he was English. As George himself put it on page 151 of his book, “Memoirs of a Professional Cad” (New York : Putnam, 1960), he was “a somewhat hybrid Englishman”.
In actuality he was Russian. His mother’s family came to Estonia from Scotland in the early seventeenth century and were wealthy with a solid social position. George’s father, Henry, was thought to have been orphaned at an early age. Henry’s father was believed to have been a Paul Sanders born in London. As is told in the authorized biography of George, “George Sanders: An Exhausted Life” (Lanham, New York, London : Madison Books, 1990) by Richard VanDerBeets, “Recent disclosures, however, indicate that Henry Sanders was illegitimately born to a Russian noblewoman of the Czar’s court on October 20, 1868, that his real father was ‘a prince of the house of Oldenburg’ married to a sister of the Czar. At the time of Henry’s birth, there was an Angl0-Russian family living in St. Petersburg named Sanders whose mother Dagmar, was a lady-in-waiting to the Dowager Empress, and by means of this court connection Henry was placed in the care of the Sanders family who, although comfortably well-off, were also given substantial funds for his keep and education. ‘Only in recent years, and through a chance remark,’ Maragaret [George’s sister] reports, ‘did the truth of our father’s background eventually come to light’.
The complete story was confirmed to her by Mara Sanders, the youngest daughter and last surviving member of the Anglo-Russian Sanders family, who ‘gradually came to the conclusion that since all concerned were now no longer alive, she no longer need keep the secret’. ” (page 4)
This information came to light after George’s death so he never knew he had no English ancestry.

I am really sorry you are having that problem. I have not heard that from any of the other people who are automatically notified of a comment. I am afraid I don’t have the answer but you might try this site http://wordpress.org/support/ or this one http://www.justanswer.com/sip/wordpress?r=ppc|ga|2|Computer+%2D+Programming|Wordpress&JPKW=wordpress%20help&JPDC=S&JPST=&JPAD=10058279938&JPMT=e&JPNW=g&JPAF=txt&JPCD=20111123&JPRC=1&JPOP=Every9sechybridTrans&gclid=CO-dwbbPhK4CFYXd4AodUWlY3Q both provided by WordPress. There are some other places that will provide help such as http://www.jungermedia.com/wordpress-help/ but they may charge. I just wanted to congratulate you for this wonderful blog… it’s almost too much for sords ! I’m crazy about George Sanders ever since I saw him in “All About Eve” when I was 14. He’s so handsome, moving and talented ! I cherish the biography I have about him by Richard Vanderbeets, and I can’t hear him sing without nearly faint 😀 So thanks again, all your pictures and messages are just great, I’m so glad other people have also George in their heart 🙂
Oct 24, 2012 @ 18:42:26
Hi
So glad you are enjoying my blog to the Glorious George. He was everything all men should be and so few are. There are a number of us fanatical George fans around the world. We are lucky.
He is the most talented, brillant, and handsome man ever and we are blessed that we can enjoy his movies even today.
I fell for George in his 1940 Saint movies. George would be appalled because he described the Saint as “ridiculous and implausible”. Perhaps so, but no one was ever more handsome and desirable.

I have been surfing online more than 2 hours today, yet I never found
any interesting article like yours. It’s pretty worth enough for me.
In my view, if all site owners and bloggers made good content as you did, the net will
be much more useful than ever before.

May 20, 2015 @ 15:50:58
Hi, thanks for the kind comment! I hope to get back to writing more posts about this truly remarkable man.
Aug 06, 2015 @ 19:10:45
I really enjoy this site! 20 years ago I discovered George Sander’s films. He died a year before I was born and unfortunately most people of my generation do not know who he was. I’m so glad to see all that has been added to the internet over the years about him. Just yesterday I watched on YouTube George present Kim Hunter’s Best Supporting Actress Academy Award. Seems as though Mr. Sanders took his talent for granted. He probably wouldn’t have believed that this many years later he continues to make people happy. Thank you for your dedication.
Sep 05, 2015 @ 16:07:31
Hi Linda! Thanks for your comment. I am dedicated to George Sanders and do all I can to publicize him. He was indeed brilliant and a man with many talents. As I often say “There is not now. nor has there ever been, nor will there ever be, a man as brilliant, talented, handsome, sexy, and desirable as George Henry Sanders”. I am a member of a group of women from several different countries who are devoted to George.
Aug 16, 2015 @ 13:17:42
Hi Judy – a newcomer to your pages but hope my info is of interest. The dapper Mr George Sanders; Most Handsome Man etc… may I humbly offer Mr. Sanders’ supporting cast member who played the Embassy official “Stengler” in “The Saint in London” as worthy of consideration too? – why? – because he was my Grandfather; the prolific Jewish-German performer; Carl Heinz Jaffé. I have 2 rare PR film stills from my private collection can happily share with you if you re interested to post; just let me know… best wishes; Michael Jaffé; London England.
Sep 05, 2015 @ 15:50:57
Hi Michael
Sep 05, 2015 @ 15:58:45
Hi Michael,
Thanks for the comment. I enjoyed your grandfather’s performance as Stengler. You probably know that he was in another movie with George. Specifically “Ivanhoe” in which your grandfather played an Austrian monk.
Indeed, I would be interested in the film stills.
For further communication you can email me at origin1860@gmail.com
Best wishes,
Judy Robinson
